#MusicalMemories – MOLLYANNA

We have to admit we don’t know a lot about Sheffield’s MOLLYANNA other than they released a phenomenal EP last year and have just followed it with the best single we have heard in 2017. Louder is Paramore meets Kate Miller Heidke accompanied by a video that just blows our mind. To hail them THE act to watch in 2017, we caught up with drummer Adam…

What song reminds you most of your childhood?

Bit of a weird one for me really, but Minor Thing by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was the first song that every really struck a chord with me. It laid the foundation for my music taste and I can recall every single bit of the track perfectly – massive drums, a perfectly cemented bass and guitar riff, with complete nonsense firing out of Kiedis’ mouth, two blazing guitar solos, a beautiful string section and wide harmonies. I’m not gonna apologise for gushing as it’s all just come rushing back. I love it and it takes me right back to being a kid.

Which song inspired you to become a musician/singer?

FAR too many to tie it down to even a top 10. I spent the majority of my youth singing everything from The Beach Boys, to Schubert, to The Foo Fighters. No one song made me become a musician, but over a long period of time something I loved doing turned into a passion, and from that music has practically consumed my life – I wouldn’t ever want to do anything else.

Which song do you wish you had written?

Hands down, Sussudio by Phil Collins. Super 80s cheese with soaring vocals pushed forward by massively punchy and camp 909/Linn drums, wide synths, janky-ass funk guitar AND a real brass section?!! What’s not to love. Unless you hate the 80s, because then everything.

Which artist/band has been the most inspirational to you?

Very difficult to say! There’ve been loads of groups and artists who just put out great music on such a consistent basis. I think one group would be The Dear Hunter. Casey Crescenzo, the group’s figurehead, is an insanely talented song writer and The Colour Spectrum epitomises that – so many different genres, brilliantly performed and amazingly well recorded. Nick Crescenzo, Casey’s brother, is the drummer of the band and my god-damn hero – great creativity and sound; if you’re a drummer and haven’t heard of him, go check him out.

Which song/album currently dominates your attention?

Any album by Jinsang, but mainly Solitude. I have the joy of working from home and there’s nothing more calming than flicking through his discography when things are getting on top of you. Chilled beats and nostalgic sounds.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

The aforementioned Casey, or another hero of mine, Josh Homme. Josh has a magical touch on nearly everything within his stratosphere and his sound, style and west-coast swagger bleed through it all – another truly talented musician.
