#MusicalMemories: Zealand’s Phil Joel
Phil Joel is far from a newcomer to the music industry. Having made his name as part of the Grammy nominated Newsboys. Having also released a series of striking solo albums, the US based New Zealander has finally delivered the debut of album of his new project, Zealand. A stunning collection of radio friendly rock songs, with a little hint of Coldplay, this is a collection to not be missed. We caught up with Phil and took a trip down musical memory lane.
What song reminds you most of your childhood?
The theme song for Coronation Street. Thanks Grandma.
Which song inspired you to become a musician/singer?
It has to be One by U2. “We’re one, but we’re not the same, we get to carry each other, carry each other” It’s songs like that get into your bone marrow.
Which song do you wish you had written?
Bitter Sweet Symphony by the Verve.
Which artist/band has been the most inspirational to you?
Hands down Neil Finn. His lyrical turns and melodies are always sooo good! He keeps getting better and now he’s touring with Fleetwood Mac -which is mind blowing! I can’t wait to catch that show. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s a fellow Kiwi.
Which song/album currently dominates your attention?
‘Don’t Give In’ – the new single from one of my all time fav bands, Snow Patrol. Also Anderson .Paak’s album ‘Malibu’ and anything by Tycho to have on in the background.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Richard Ashcroft of the Verve, Sir Elton and Tyler the Creator.
Richard for melancholy realness, Sir Elton for perfect melodies, and Tyler for beats and mad-fresh irrational song structure. Guys if you read this call me, lets get in a room and make it happen, the world needs a new mass anthem of hope. Seriously, call me!
