Sydney Composer Elliot Wheeler Reveals First Single off Upcoming Album

‘Baker Man’ is the breathtaking new single from critically acclaimed Australian composer and producer Elliot Wheeler.

One of the figures behind the music featured in Baz Lurhmann’s upcoming adaptation of F. Scott Fitzerald’s The Great Gatsby, Wheeler boasts an impressive musical back catalogue. Working as Arranger and Additional Music Producer, Wheeler collaborated  on material with all of the film’s artists – among which were the likes of Jay Z, Lana Del Ray and Jack White – as well as providing original additional music for the film. Prior to this, the talented classically trained composer has also worked on new Cannes-bound short film Yardbird, Australian comedy series The Chaser and George Miller’s new Mad Max feature Fury Road, in addition to writing music for documentary and animation that have landed Wheeler many prestigious awards.

Now looking towards the release of his debut solo album The Long Time, Wheeler has unveiled the haunting lead single ‘Baker Man’.  A project some six years in the making, the album has an understandably cinematic feel which is exemplified by ‘Baker Man’.  Opening with a warm, delicate piano melody, Wheeler’s falsetto soon takes hold of the listener. A beautifully understated track, ‘Baker Man’ expertly builds from this opening into a sprawling piece which adds a perfect orchestra of instruments. Taking on the role as composer and engineer on the record, it turns out much of the playing was down to Wheeler’s own multi-instrumental abilities.

Describing his own sound as ‘Morricone meets Portishead via Cinematic Orchestra’, certainly goes some way into defining Wheeler’s new single. Drawing upon other comparisons, acts such as Anthony and The Johnsons and Nick Cave can all be heard – the latter of which Wheeler has a particular link with, having produced and arranged the ‘Ship Song Project’ for the Sydney Opera House in 2011.

Available for download now, ‘Baker Man’ features a hand-animated undersea video which can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqKZpsIki9E
